映画の他にも、母親が持っていた日本のCDも聴いていたというMitskiさんは、中島みゆきさんや松任谷由実さん、椎名林檎さんも好きだと話してくれました。

むかしの日本のインタビューで椎名林檎にふれていて、確かにそれっぽさもあるけれど、日本の読者むけのサービスもあるのかなと思っていたら、英語圏のインタビューでも頻繁に椎名林檎のはなしをしていて面白い。

Are there any lyricists, poets, or writers in particular who inspire you?

There’s a Japanese [musician], but the lyrics are Japanese so it might not make much of a difference to Rookie readers. Her name is Shiina Ringo. What I get from her lyrics is that sometimes being specific and descriptive is really important.

Is there an album that when you were in school, or maybe even today, that you have in your mind like, "Someday I'm going to make that album"?

There is a Japanese artist, Shiina Ringo, her — I'm going to say this in Japanese, it's a long title — Kauk Samen Kuri no Hana, and maybe someone out there will be inspired to write that down and look it up, but it's my favorite album in that there's so much attention to detail, so many instruments. It was a great feat for her as a solo artist to make, so I think I was turned to that album.

HARRISON: I actually don’t go there. I would say it’s maybe a Santa Clarita vibe. But I’ve had phases. I read somewhere that you like Sheena Ringo.

MITSKI: Oh, I love Sheena Ringo. Have you seen videos of her performing? She’s so fierce.

HARRISON: I love Sheena Ringo. That’s what I was going to say, the show with Tokyo Jihen. It’s so Alexander McQueen “Highland Rape.” It’s so ornate, and she’s wearing those big antlers that are wrapped in the fabric. I don’t feel like I’m a standup, but I aspire to do a standup show where the presentation is unnecessarily ornate and there’s like, an H.R. Giger thing going on on stage, but the content is brain-liquifyingly banal and boring and like, all about Tinder.

●去年の『Interview』誌で、椎名林檎が好きだと話していましたよね。

「そう！」

●彼女に会ったことはあるんですか？

「まさか！ ない、ない、ない（笑）。ええと、彼女のアルバム『加爾基 精液 栗ノ花』が出たとき、私はちょうど日本に住んでいて。CDショップで試聴サンプルを聴いた時のことが忘れられない。当時はまだ、ヘッドフォンで試聴する時代だったから。本っ当に衝撃を受けたの！ それで、私はそれ以来ずっと、あの音を追いかけてきた気がする。

彼女は本当にそれをすごくうまくやるから。いろんなオーケストラ楽器や、たくさんのテクスチャーを全部混ぜ合わせて。ああいうことの天才だと思う。彼女と、それからビョークも。私は10代の頃からずっと大ファンで。でも、たぶん彼女には一生会えないと思う。怖すぎて、会えない。絶対会えない（笑）」

新型コロナウィルスが流行ったころの "Live on KEXP at Home" (2021) で、"Washing Machine Heart" をカバーしていて、これも良い。
